Char & Rick arrived here a week after reading a two-line “real estate for sale” classified ad in the Sunday paper. It said “come to god’s country”.

Horn Hill was the site of a family ranch purchased by Sanpoil Realty, and almost the entire W side of the mountain was for sale, 20 acres at a time. We walked almost everywhere for three days, staying in the Bailey Cabin at night. And we signed a contract to buy “two twenties” off Frosty Creek Road.

That summer bitterroot bloomed on a rocky patch of ground, and our 40 acres got its name.
